Catherine Redmond: Painting on Paper and Canvas
December 14, 2013 – February 16, 2014
Elizabeth V. Sullivan Gallery
The Art Students League’s Vytlacil campus
Opening Reception: Saturday, December 21, 2–5 p.m.

I am less interested in the meaning of discreet forms than in their relationship to one another, which can reconfigure the story. I have never understood the difference between reference and not. It all sits on the stage of a flat plane, and I create out of that, reaching toward something I can’t name. I don’t deny narrative exactly, but I prefer it to emerge organically from the paint rather than by conscious choice. The twenty-three recent paintings and cut papers in this exhibition reveal my continued interest in the stage of action where color and edge tremble against each other.
