The Studio Project | Sylvie Covey

My studio loft is right on Times Square, on 44th Street and Broadway. I have been living and working there since 1978, living through the neighborhood’s changes and its rebuilding. There are seventeen windows altogether in my studio loft, which comprises the whole floor. Each tenant in my building has a whole floor. It is a narrow, well-kept brick building with gargoyles on the roof, and is equipped with an elevator. I am on the eleventh floor so it is quiet. There are four gothic windows in the print studio and in my bedroom next door. I have a printmaking studio with a large Charles Brand etching press, a light sensitive unit, printing tables, print dryer, flat files, etc. There is also a large computer room where I also sometimes conduct workshops. I can sit ten people at the work table. Besides hand printing, I also do a lot of digital work on my computers these days. I have three printers set up for different tasks. I love the lights of Times Square, but there are too many people on the streets. It is very convenient to be in Midtown, however. I can walk everywhere, and I can walk to work. I consider myself lucky to have this space.
