For the last several decades, the Instructors Exhibition has opened the fall season in the Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery at the Art Students League. In an atelier-based school, like the League, an instructor’s work of art can serve as a kind of shorthand for the unique curriculum that he or she brings to the studio. This year we welcome ten artists into the regular season corps of instructors: Sigmund Abeles, who will be teaching Mastery & Empathic Figure Drawing; Garin Baker, who will be teaching Direct Figure & Portrait Painting; Peter Bonner, who will be teaching Abstraction: Inspiration & Development of Ideas; Bil Donovan, who will be teaching Dynamic Fashion Drawing; Emily Hubley, who will be teaching Two-Dimensional Animation; Simon Levenson, who will be teaching Oil Painting from Life—Understanding Painting; Fran O’Neill, who will be teaching Painting, Color, Design; Kamilla Talbot, who will be teaching En Plein Air Watercolor Painting on Governors Island; Jason Yarmosky, who will be teaching Elements of Drawing, Anatomy for Artists; and Weiqing Yuan, who will be teaching Exploring Watercolors.
